I joined the railway in 1947 and I came into Goulburn to live then. After I'd been there about seven years my wife cleared out. I had to get someone in to look after the kiddies while I went to work. |

| It was a brick house and didn't have any damp course or anything. The rooms were damp and the kiddies always seemed to have colds so I decided to sell it. But when I went to get a loan nobody would lend me any money. The banks wouldn't lend me any money unless I got a new house built. There were no building societies then in Goulburn like there are now, so I was in a hell of a fix. |

And one of the agents here said "There's a war service home in Australia Street for sale". So I had a look at the place and even though it wasn't really big enough, like it only had the two bedrooms, I had no alternative but to take it, so I bought it through the war service homes. | |||
